What is multicultural counseling?

By Ajay Rashe

Multicultural counseling is acknowledging race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and social economic status that impact the client. Marginalized individuals and minorities often have unique experiences due to their status. Multicultural counseling can take many forms and is important to acknowledge the lens from which the client view experiences that influence their perception of treatment.

For clinicians, treatment planning and effective communication are vital to meet cultural needs to be effective and mindful. A safe, welcoming, and respectful space is important to the building of a therapeutic relationship, and meeting counseling competencies with diverse clientele.

What to watch out for?

It is important to ensure that a counselor is taking into account their personal biases or beliefs when working with diversity. Clients experiences will differ and terminology may as well. The use of reflective listening is important in practicing multicultural counseling. Clinicians need to reduce the use of “one size fits all” mentality and work to take into account individuality.

Things to remember:

Let the client define their experience and practice using their words to affirm and promote understanding of the impact.

For clinicians, it is important to not assume that the clients cause for symptoms come only come from their identities. When working with diverse clients, it is paramount that we acknowledge diversity but are not defined by it.
